How long does a bathroom renovation take?

On site, most bathrooms are a few weeks of work. The program is usually decided long before the first tile goes on.

Key takeaways

  • -Strip-out and any framing or subfloor repairs come first, followed by rough-in for plumbing and electrical, then sheeting, screeding and waterproofing.
  • -Several stages have to wait on someone else: a plumber's rough-in, a waterproofer's cure, a glazier measuring only after tiling is finished, a stone top templated on site.
  • -Late selections are the number one cause. Tiles, tapware and vanities need to be on site before the trades that install them arrive.

01

The stages, in order

Strip-out and any framing or subfloor repairs come first, followed by rough-in for plumbing and electrical, then sheeting, screeding and waterproofing.

Waterproofing needs curing time before tiling starts. After tiling comes grouting, then fit-off of tapware, joinery, glass and accessories, then silicone and make-good.

02

Why the calendar is longer than the labour

Several stages have to wait on someone else: a plumber's rough-in, a waterproofer's cure, a glazier measuring only after tiling is finished, a stone top templated on site.

Those handovers, not the work itself, are what stretch a program.

03

What causes most delays

Late selections are the number one cause. Tiles, tapware and vanities need to be on site before the trades that install them arrive.

Second is what we find behind the old shower - damaged framing or a floor that was never set out to fall correctly. Both are common in older hills homes and both are better fixed than covered.

How to keep it moving

Lock in every selection before we start, order long-lead items early, and agree in writing how variations will be handled.

We give you a stage-by-stage program at quote so you know which week the room is unusable and when you get it back.
